The U.S. Federal Appeals Court held an oral argument in the appeal of Roman Sterlingov, the operator accused of running the cryptocurrency mixing platform Bitcoin Fog, focusing on whether the U.S. Department of Justice has sufficient grounds to determine that Bitcoin Fog operated in Washington, D.C., and whether U.S. money transmission laws apply to internet crypto services targeting global users. During the hearing, the judges also questioned the FBI's use of IP overlap analysis for associating accounts, criticizing the lack of clear statistical and peer review basis. This case is also seen as one of the significant instances where the U.S. has prosecuted developers and service providers of privacy-focused crypto tools under the unregistered money transmission law, Section 1960. Related disputes also involve the Roman Storm and Samourai Wallet cases. (The Block)
