So many people in the group are asking what the term hopium actually means. Basically, hopium is a combination of hope and opium, an internet slang term commonly used to mock blind optimism or hope that’s unfounded. Just imagine a fictional medicine you can take when you need some motivation—that’s the concept.
In the crypto community, hopium is our way of talking about investors who have false hope. For example, someone still believes a dead coin will moon, even though its fundamentals are clearly bad. That’s called hopium. People who fall for hopium are usually blinded by denial, unable to accept the reality that their investment is poor.
Some also equate hopium with copium, but they’re actually different. Copium is more about coping mechanisms, how we handle negative situations. Meanwhile, hopium is about unrealistic hope. So copium is about how we deal with problems, and hopium is about excessive hope.
This term has a negative connotation because it’s often used to mock people with unreasonable expectations. It’s usually used sarcastically or to tease. On crypto timelines, it’s very common to see posts like “a little hopium for all of us” or “Wen BTC 100k #hopium,” especially when the market is bearish and people need some motivation.
