Just read something that's been sitting with me. Janice McAfee, widow of the antivirus pioneer and crypto figure John McAfee, is still living in Spain in basically survival mode. We're talking nearly five years after her husband died in a Barcelona prison, and she's doing odd jobs just to get by. No inheritance, no estate, nothing.
Here's what gets me: she still doesn't have answers about how he actually died. Yeah, a Catalan court ruled it suicide back in 2023, but Janice wasn't convinced then and apparently still isn't now. She's been trying to get access to his autopsy report for years but keeps hitting walls. The cost for an independent autopsy? 30,000 euros. Money she doesn't have. She was literally telling people that two years earlier she could've afforded it, but not anymore.
The whole situation is tragic when you think about it. John's net worth had tanked from over $100 million down to around $4 million by the time he died. He claimed he had nothing left, and after his death, with all the U.S. judgments against him, there was basically nothing for Janice to inherit. She's stuck in this limbo, working whatever jobs she can find, while the Spanish authorities won't release the autopsy and she can't afford to get her own.
What really bothers her isn't even about fighting with authorities anymore. She just wants to know what happened and fulfill John's wish to be cremated. She talks about how they spoke every single day while he was imprisoned, how she doesn't believe the official narrative, all these details about the prison video and the response that doesn't add up to her.
There was that Netflix documentary last year that portrayed them as fugitives, but Janice felt it missed the real story entirely. She wants John remembered properly, not as some sensationalized figure in a true crime doc.
The whole thing is a reminder of how fast people get forgotten. Janice McAfee just wants closure and to move forward, and honestly, she deserves that much.
