U.S. President Trump announced that Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Commissioner Marty Makary has stepped down.

According to Politico, Makary resigned. Earlier reports indicated that the White House planned to dismiss Makary.

Reportedly, Kyle Diamantas, who previously served as FDA Food Safety Director, will succeed as acting commissioner. Trump did not mention Kyle Diamantas by name on Tuesday.

During Makary’s tenure, the FDA experienced internal dysfunction, leadership instability, and turmoil. Meanwhile, pharmaceutical companies, doctors, and patient groups have increasingly opposed FDA regulatory decisions, including high-profile rejections of drugs for rare diseases. At the same time, the White House has grown increasingly impatient with Makary’s slow actions on key Trump policy initiatives, such as the legalization of e-cigarettes.
