(MENAFN) A pedestrian died Friday night after being struck by a Frontier Airlines aircraft during takeoff at Denver International Airport in the US state of Colorado, airport authorities said.

Officials stated that Frontier Flight 4345 hit the individual while departing the runway, prompting an immediate emergency response at the airport.

“Frontier Flight 4345 reported striking a pedestrian during takeoff,” the airport said in a statement posted on the US social media platform X, adding that emergency crews responded to the scene.

Authorities also reported a small engine fire following the incident, though firefighters quickly brought the situation under control.

According to officials, the individual had breached the airport’s perimeter fence and entered the runway area. Reports said the person was struck roughly two minutes later while crossing the airfield.

The pedestrian was declared dead at the scene. Authorities noted that the individual was not believed to be employed by the airport, and identification efforts were still underway.

There were 231 people onboard the aircraft when the incident occurred.

Airport officials said 12 passengers sustained minor injuries, while five of them were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment.

The affected runway was temporarily shut down as investigators examined the scene.

Passengers were later transported to the terminal by bus, and most eventually continued their journeys aboard another Frontier Airlines flight.
