You know, I've been thinking about one of the wildest stories in crypto history lately. Gerald Cotten and QuadrigaCX—this whole saga still doesn't sit right with me, even years later.

Back in 2013, when Bitcoin was basically just a weird internet thing most people hadn't heard of, Cotten co-founded QuadrigaCX. It became Canada's biggest crypto exchange. The guy positioned himself as this visionary bringing digital assets to the mainstream. He had the lifestyle to match it too—luxury travel, yachts, the whole package. People trusted him because he seemed to have it all figured out.

But here's where it gets sketchy. Unlike other exchanges that distribute control, Gerald Cotten kept sole custody of the private keys to their cold wallets. That's a massive red flag in hindsight. If something happened to him, nobody else could access the funds. And then... something did happen.

December 2018. Cotten and his wife go to India for their honeymoon. Within days, he's dead from Crohn's disease complications. The body gets embalmed quickly. His will gets updated just days before he dies. And suddenly QuadrigaCX implodes—$215 million in Bitcoin and other assets just vanish. Users locked out. No access. Nothing.

Obviously this sparked every conspiracy theory imaginable. Did Gerald Cotten fake his death? Was QuadrigaCX always a Ponzi scheme? Investigators found millions moving through hidden transactions, which made people wonder if he'd been moving money before disappearing. Some investors even demanded his body be exhumed in 2021 to confirm he was actually dead.

The thing is, thousands of people lost everything. Savings gone. No recovery mechanism. Canadian authorities investigated but never recovered the funds. Whether Gerald Cotten pulled off the ultimate exit scam or something else happened, the result was the same—a complete disaster for everyone involved.

It's one of those cases that really shows why custody and transparency matter so much in this space. Makes you think twice about where you're holding your assets, you know?
