Latest development in the OpenAI and Musk lawsuit: Sam Altman will testify in court today
BlockBeats News, May 12 — Sam Altman is expected to testify at the U.S. Federal Court in Oakland, California, on Tuesday local time, regarding Elon Musk’s lawsuit against OpenAI. According to lawyers in Monday’s court hearing, Altman will appear after OpenAI Chairman Bret Taylor completes his testimony.
Musk sued OpenAI, Altman, and President Greg Brockman in 2024, accusing the company of violating its original “non-profit” and “public interest” commitments, and claiming that approximately $38 million donated to OpenAI was used for unauthorized commercial purposes.
Taylor emphasized the functions of the OpenAI board and the governance structure after the company’s restructuring during Monday’s hearing. He stated that during Altman’s brief removal as CEO in 2023, the company was on the verge of “collapse.”
Taylor also said that after completing the capital restructuring last year, OpenAI’s organizational structure has become clearer, but the non-profit entity still retains control. Additionally, some investors, including SoftBank and Thrive Capital, had tied their investment conditions to the company’s structural adjustments.
On the other hand, Satya Nadella also testified on Monday. Nadella stated that Musk never raised concerns with him about Microsoft’s investment in OpenAI violating any special agreement, and he said Microsoft “chose to invest in OpenAI when no one else was willing to bet,” which he feels “very proud of.”
Nadella also commented on the 2023 OpenAI board controversy, saying: “In my opinion, it was almost amateurish.”
