Have you ever wondered where the term HODL comes from? I just recalled a pretty interesting story about how a simple typing error became part of the Bitcoin community’s DNA.
On December 18, 2013, a user posted on Bitcoin Talk with the title “TÔI ĐANG HODLING” — but that wasn’t the correct spelling. However, instead of fixing the mistake, he deliberately kept it because it accurately reflected his mood at the time.
The context back then was pretty wild. BTC had just crossed the $1,000 mark for the first time in history, but then the price plunged freely to $522. Everyone was panicking, but he wasn’t. He admitted that he was a bad trader, so instead of trying to sell at the top or buy at the bottom, he just decided to hold Bitcoin and ignore all the price fluctuations.
It was from that post that HODL became a philosophy—an entire way of life for the Bitcoin community. Now, when someone says they’re a true hodler, you can quickly tell how long they’ve been in crypto and how deep their understanding is.
Interestingly, the word HODL has become a symbol of patience and long-term faith. If you’re a true hodler, you understand that holding Bitcoin isn’t just a strategy—it’s also an attitude. That’s why when you hear someone pronounce or write the word hodler, you immediately know they truly understand this world.
You can send this to your friends to remind them that the correct spelling of this word is HODL, not HOLD—that subtle but very important difference in the Bitcoin community 😉
