US Media: Musk's Grok is steadily losing ground in the AI race
Golden Finance reports that on May 12th, Elon Musk’s artificial intelligence model Grok is far behind its rapidly growing competitors.
Meanwhile, a large-scale computing power leasing agreement between its parent company SpaceX and Anthropic has led the outside world to question: Does Grok still have a chance to catch up with industry leaders?
Since its launch two years ago, Grok has attracted millions of users through integration with Musk’s social platform X and controversial features such as “AI companions.”
However, the latest data shows that its growth momentum seems to have stalled.
According to analytics firm AppMagic, Grok’s downloads in April this year dropped to about 8.3 million, compared to over 20 million in January.
A survey conducted by research organization Recon Analytics among over 260k American AI users and professionals shows that in Q2 2026, the proportion of respondents willing to pay for Grok remained almost unchanged at just 0.174%, up slightly from 0.173% a year earlier.
In contrast, over 6% of respondents said they had paid for ChatGPT.
