I just reread the story of one man, and it truly amazed me. It’s about Colonel Sanders—who proved that age and circumstances are absolutely not a life sentence.
In general, his life was nonstop struggle. His father died when he was 6, and the little one had to grow up instantly—cooking and taking care of the younger ones. He left school early, and then he just bounced around doing different jobs. A farm, a streetcar, the railway, the army, insurance—he tried everything. And everywhere he met refusals, dismissals, and disappointments. Sounds depressing, doesn’t it?
But then, when he was 40, something changed. He started cooking food at a gas station, and his fried chicken became a hit. For the first time in his life, he felt like he was creating something worthwhile. And then—bam!—at 65, a new highway destroyed his business. All he had left was a social assistance check for 105 bucks.
Most people would have just given up here. But Colonel Sanders wasn’t like that. He got into his car, took his recipe, and began driving from restaurant to restaurant. He slept in his car, knocked on doors, and pitched the idea. He was rejected more than 1,000 times. A thousand times! But he didn’t break.
On the 1,010th attempt—miracle!—one restaurant finally said yes. And that’s how KFC was born. By the time he was 70, the chain had reached all across America. In 1964, the Colonel sold the company for 2 million dollars, but his name remained the face of the brand. Today, it’s 25,000 outlets in 145 countries.
Do you know what amazes me about this story? Colonel Sanders started from scratch at an age when people usually are already preparing for retirement. Everything was against him—his age, money, and experience. But he wouldn’t let that stop him. Every rejection was just information—not a sentence.
It teaches us the main thing: failure is not the end; it’s feedback. Success rarely comes on the first try. If a person who was practically at rock bottom at 65 could create a global empire, then everyone has a chance. There’s no excuse to give up. Remember Colonel Sanders when you feel like throwing everything away.
