I recently looked into Zhou Shouzi's personal development trajectory, and it's quite interesting. This guy is definitely the typical "chosen one" persona, but a closer look at his experience shows that he mostly made the right choices at key moments.
Born in Singapore in 1983, he stood out in national exams at age 12, joined the military at 18, and after retiring with the rank of second lieutenant at over 20, he went to University College London to study economics. This timing is actually quite noteworthy—he didn't follow the conventional elite education path directly, but instead served in the military first. In Singapore, this is a common choice, but for personal development, this military experience likely shaped his later execution skills.
At 23, he entered investment banking, and at 25, he made a somewhat bold decision—quit his job at Goldman Sachs to pursue an MBA at Harvard, and also interned at Facebook. This timing is critical; around 2008, the internet was still in a rapid growth phase. His ability to see this opportunity indicates he has good foresight.
The subsequent story is probably more familiar to everyone. At 27, he led a $500 million funding round for JD.com; at 32, he joined Xiaomi as CFO, driving the company's IPO. During this period, he basically seized several major opportunities within the Asian tech wave. By 38, Zhou Shouzi joined ByteDance as TikTok CEO, which might be the most pressure-filled position in his career.
Regarding the figure of "700M yuan annual salary," I think it might be somewhat exaggerated. But regardless of the exact number, he indeed faced enormous market and political pressures in his role at TikTok, which is undeniable.
Overall, Zhou Shouzi's story is quite typical—he seized several era-specific opportunities and made the right decisions at the right times. It’s not some "miracle life," but more about maintaining sharpness in the face of big trends, then executing effectively. There are quite a few such figures in the tech industry; Zhou Shouzi just happens to be more in the spotlight because of his position at TikTok.
