Something quite interesting recently happened in the world of memes and cryptocurrencies that’s worth analyzing. A major trading platform announced it would list contract pairs for MORPHO and CHILLGUY, and honestly, the second case is what caught my attention because of all the layers involved.
For those who don’t know, Chill Guy is a character that went viral among Gen Z. It was created by American artist Phillip Banks and first appeared on October 4, 2023. The image is quite simple but effective: an anthropomorphic dog wearing a gray sweater, blue jeans, and red sneakers, always with hands in pockets and a calm smile, as if nothing literally matters. It’s the kind of character that perfectly captures an attitude.
What happened afterward was pure virality. TikTok, Instagram, Threads, everywhere. Gen Z adopted it as their own, especially because it represents that attitude of simply not caring. Musk mentioned it, El Salvador’s president retweeted it, and obviously someone decided this was perfect for launching a meme token.
That’s where it gets interesting. The original creator, Phillip Banks, was not at all happy. He publicly stated that he did not approve of his creation being used for worthless coins without official licensing, and even threatened legal action. But in the end, Chill Guy ended up being listed in contracts anyway. That’s something that hadn’t happened before with other memes without official authorization.
Because here’s the point: normally platforms are very cautious with tokens that don’t have the original creator’s license. But Chill Guy managed to break that barrier, and that raises questions about what this means for other unauthorized meme tokens.
Looking at the current numbers, CHILLGUY is at $0.02 with a +14.67% move in 24 hours and a volume of $213.11K. These aren’t massive figures, but the movement exists. MORPHO, on the other hand, is at $2.09 with -2.06% in the same period.
But the deeper point here is what this says about today’s youth. Chill Guy became a symbol precisely because it represents something real: that feeling of helplessness, that “just surviving is enough of a fight.” It’s similar to what happened with Goblin Mode, the Oxford Word of 2022, which literally means “to let oneself go.” Young people identify with that attitude because it reflects how many feel about the world.
And then come meme coins. Some see them as pure speculation, others as a way to participate in something cultural that resonates with them. The Chill Guy phenomenon in the crypto world is actually a reflection of this: when something cultural resonates so strongly with a generation, it eventually finds its way even where it wasn’t invited.
What’s coming now is to see if this opens the door for other unauthorized meme tokens. If Chill Guy managed to sneak in, what other cultural characters could follow? It’s a moment where copyright and meme culture directly clash in the trading platform space, and honestly, the outcome is unpredictable.
