Japanese media reported on Monday (the 11th) that Japan’s large snack manufacturer Calbee (Japan: 2229) will begin selling some of its potato chip products in black-and-white packaging. According to reports, Calbee has notified partner manufacturers that, due to the impact of the situation in the Middle East, supplies of raw materials used for packaging—such as ink—have become unstable, so it will change the packaging design for some of its main products, such as potato chips, to a minimalist style using only black and white.

The conflict in the Middle East has caused tight supplies of naphtha, a solvent used for printing ink, which is produced through petroleum refining.

Calbee black-and-white packaged potato chips to start shipping from late May

Japanese media cited sources as saying that this two-color (black-and-white) packaging will be applied to products including potato chips such as “lightly salted” and “French-style clear soup” flavors, shrimp sticks, and more, with shipments expected to begin in late May.

NHK cited Calbee as saying, “Depending on changes in the future situation, we expect that further impacts may occur. We will do everything we can to improve the current situation.”
