Leading the depleted Lakers to finish their last game at the age of 41, LeBron James's future has once again been thrust into the spotlight, prompting many to speculate whether this will mark the end of his 21-year legendary career. I believe next season is unlikely to be his final, but "this season" could very well be the closing chapter of his time with the Lakers. He will still remain on the court as a player, just likely wearing the jersey of another team.
Although the team was ultimately swept 0-4, James's performance was impeccable; in the playoffs, he averaged 23.6 points, 7.8 assists, and 6.1 rebounds per game, with a true shooting percentage of 61%, still an elite-level player at age 41.
And with his contract expiring, that is the starting point for all these uncertainties. James will become a fully unrestricted free agent this summer, free to sign with any team. For someone eager to win his fifth championship, free agency means having the upper hand. While the Lakers currently have salary cap space and a valuable first-round pick, convincing him to stay long-term will be extremely difficult.
So looking ahead, retirement is actually the least likely option. He has always been a player who plans his career carefully, and ending his career in this way would be very uncharacteristic of him. Ultimately, the decision depends on whether he still wants to compete for glory and which team can offer him the best opportunity.
No matter which team he ultimately wears the jersey of, as long as he’s still running on the court, it’s a game worth cherishing for fans. #PolymarketDailyHotspot🔹
