As the Lakers face the danger of being swept out, will LeBron James retire before the next NBA season? It has also become a popular topic for betting. My bet is that he won’t retire. The reasons are as follows:
1. The league and the team have not received any retirement notice: NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has publicly said that the league has not received any information about James planning to retire. This shows that his career is still on a normal trajectory.
2. His agent has made a clear statement: James’s agent, Rich Paul, has boldly claimed that James can still play for at least another five years. This statement reflects his team’s long-term confidence in his physical condition and career planning.
3. His competitive dominance still remains
First round vs. the Rockets: averaging 23.1 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists, and the Lakers—despite being limited by injuries—advanced 4-2 (less reliable statistics, but cross-verified from multiple sources).
Second round G1 vs. the Thunder: 27 points with 12 made on 17 attempts, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists; a 70.6% shooting rate set a postseason efficiency record for players over 40 (less reliable but specific data).
Even if his physical condition is limited, his core role is irreplaceable.
4. Free agency dynamics further support staying on
Multiple strong teams are competing
Including the Clippers, Cavaliers, Warriors, and Knicks—these teams have listed him as their top target for the offseason (less reliable rumors, but repeatedly reported by multiple media outlets). Clippers owner Ballmer is reportedly preparing a 2+1 contract proposal (credibility is weak), which shows the league still recognizes his immediate competitiveness.
The Lakers front office continues to keep him
Lakers President of Basketball Operations Rob Pelinka publicly said as early as the start of the season, “hoping James finishes his entire career with the Lakers,” and internal expectations are that his contract will be extended through 2026 or 2027 (credibility is average, ESPN source).
My betting strategy is: if news comes out that LeBron is going to retire, or if the Lakers are eliminated in this round of the playoffs—making the odds of retirement rise—I will bet that he will not retire to maximize returns. Family, feel free to follow along!
