If the tax system were fair:

You earn $100,000 a year and pay $30,000 in taxes.
Your neighbor earns $1,000,000 and pays $300,000 in taxes.
Your neighbor is paying 10 times more than you.
If the tax system were truly fair, both of you should contribute $30,000, since you both receive exactly the same services from the government.
