OPPO's Mother's Day marketing campaign backfired. It was originally about the emotional needs of star-gazing women, but people pointed out that it seemed to promote extramarital affairs.
The controversial content of the campaign was: "My mom has two 'husbands,' one is my dad, and the other she sees twice a year. She usually doesn't dress up when dating my dad, but when she meets the other, she almost wears a wedding dress."
Some netizens believed that the content conveyed incorrect values; others argued that it was just a joke or a meme.
Now OPPO has apologized and withdrawn the campaign. But in a highly polarized public opinion environment regarding gender issues, the company's response has not quelled the controversy.
Previously, a star-gazing woman coincidentally met her idol Jackson Wang on her wedding day, jokingly calling him her real husband, which sparked nationwide discussion. Some even requested the groom to wear a poster and mask of the idol for wedding photos.
Of course, fans think there's nothing wrong with calling an idol "husband," but the problem is that OPPO's target audience for marketing has nothing to do with fan circles...
