US Officials: Trump Assembles Team to Assess Military Action Against Iran
On May 12, three U.S. officials stated that after negotiations with Iran stalled on Sunday, Trump met with his national security team on Monday to discuss the next steps regarding the Iran conflict, which may include the resumption of military action. U.S. officials noted that Trump aims to reach an agreement to end the war, but Iran has rejected many of his demands and has refused to make meaningful concessions on its nuclear program, bringing military options back into consideration. Recently, Trump has repeatedly threatened to bomb Iranian infrastructure if diplomatic efforts fail. Officials indicated that one option being considered is to strike 25% of targets that U.S. forces have identified but have not yet hit. It is expected that Vice President Pence, U.S. Special Envoy Hook, Secretary of State Rubio, Secretary of Defense Esper, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Milley, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and other senior officials will participate in the meeting regarding Iran.
