US Officials: Trump Assembles Team to Assess Military Action Against Iran

On May 12, Axios reported that three US officials stated that after negotiations with Iran stalled on Sunday, Trump met with his national security team on Monday to discuss the next steps regarding the potential for war with Iran, which may include resuming military action. US officials indicated that Trump aims to reach an agreement to end the conflict, but Iran has rejected many of his demands and refused to make meaningful concessions on its nuclear program, prompting military options to be reconsidered. Recently, Trump has publicly threatened to bomb Iran’s infrastructure if diplomatic efforts fail. Officials noted that one option under consideration is to strike 25% of the targets that the US military has identified but has not yet hit. It is expected that Vice President Pence, US Special Envoy Hook, Secretary of State Rubio, Secretary of Defense Esper, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Milley, CIA Director John Ratcliffe, and other senior officials will participate in the meeting regarding Iran.
