Warren Buffett's succession, I think it's going better than expected. Last weekend's Omaha Shareholders Meeting was the first time Abel took full command as CEO, but honestly, what was impressive was how he managed to introduce a fresh breeze without completely erasing Buffett's style.

What's interesting is that Abel is the type who has risen through the management ranks, and he's different from Buffett's pure investor temperament, but that difference actually seems to be a strength. The way he lined up subsidiary CEOs on stage and had them directly explain the current state of each business was unthinkable for Berkshire before. He's probably trying to show organizational strength without relying on individual charisma.

The portfolio discussion was also fascinating. Cash holdings are at an all-time high of $397 billion. This isn't just a conservative stance; it’s more like strategic flexibility. According to Abel, they’re waiting for big opportunities. Operating profit for the first quarter also increased by 18%, surpassing $11.3 billion, and the insurance division is doing well.

His cautious approach to AI also stood out. Using a deepfake video of Buffett to emphasize cyber risks is quite a clever move. It’s not about using AI for AI’s sake but judging whether real value is created—that’s in line with Buffett’s core philosophy. His attitude of not following trends, but instead focusing on what truly matters, is a crucial philosophy that should be on the agenda in today’s market.

Investments in five Japanese trading companies and a new partnership with Tokio Marine. This is unusual for Berkshire, showing a proactive approach to international expansion. It’s clear they’re aiming for long-term relationships rather than just financial transactions.

Honestly, everyone was worried about what Berkshire would look like after Buffett, but so far, those concerns might have been unfounded. Abel respects Buffett’s methods but is exploring ways to leverage their own strengths. That’s probably resonating with shareholders too. Watching how this develops from now on is definitely worth paying attention to.
