Just read this absolutely wild crypto theft case and honestly can't stop thinking about it. So this former Singapore military diver, Teo Rong Xuan, managed to steal $1.7 million in USDT from someone by just... photographing their seed phrase? Like, he literally broke into someone's apartment, found a piece of paper with the 24-word mnemonic for their Ledger wallet, snapped some photos, and that was it. The guy had stolen the victim's access card beforehand under some fake party excuse, so he knew exactly when to strike.
What gets me is how straightforward the whole thing was. Teo Rong Xuan just used those photos to transfer the funds the next day and went on a shopping spree - luxury watches, online gambling, the whole thing. He apparently blamed it on getting wrecked by the FTX collapse back in 2022, which... I mean, that's rough, but definitely not an excuse to become a thief. The crazy part? He actually pleaded guilty, so there's no mystery here.
This whole situation is basically a masterclass in why you should never, ever leave your seed phrases lying around in physical form. Teo Rong Xuan's case is literally the nightmare scenario - someone with access to your space, a camera, and bad intentions. Makes you think about how many people still keep their recovery phrases written down somewhere accessible. Honestly terrifying.
