I just came across an interesting piece of legal news. The Minnesota State Legislature recently passed a bill banning AI-generated nude image deepfakes, which has been sent to Governor Tim Walz for signing.

What is the core of this bill? Simply put, it prohibits websites and applications from providing AI tools that can generate realistic nude images. Not only are users forbidden from using such tools, but platforms are also banned from facilitating the use of "nude" generation tools, and all related advertising and promotion are completely prohibited.

The penalties are quite severe. Victims can directly sue the operators for actual damages, and may also receive up to triple damages plus punitive damages. The state attorney general can impose civil fines of up to $500k for each violation, with these fines used to support services for victims of sexual assault, domestic violence, and child abuse.

If the governor signs it, the new law will take effect on August 1, but only for cases that occur after that date. This reflects increasing regulatory concern over issues like AI-generated nude images. As AI technology advances, applications involving personal privacy and dignity indeed require stricter legal frameworks.

Interestingly, this could serve as a reference for other states. Similar legal restrictions may become more common in the future.
