On May 11, the Solana core development team Anza announced that a major upgrade to the consensus mechanism named ‘Alpenglow’ has officially begun running on the community test network, marking the entry of the largest consensus architecture change in Solana’s history into the practical testing phase. This upgrade allows validators to test the migration process from the current hybrid mechanism based on Proof-of-History (PoH) and TowerBFT to a new architecture in a real node environment. Developers refer to this transition process as ‘Alpenswitch,’ which means that validator nodes can smoothly transition to the new consensus system in the testing environment. The existing Solana architecture operates through the PoH timestamp mechanism and TowerBFT voting mechanism, excelling in high throughput and low fees, but has faced congestion and downtime issues during periods of high network load. The core goal of Alpenglow is to restructure the communication and block confirmation logic among validators to significantly enhance network response efficiency and reduce final confirmation times. Developers indicate that this mechanism is expected to shorten transaction final confirmation times from several seconds to near real-time levels. Solana co-founder Anatoly Yakovenko previously stated at Consensus Miami 2026 that if testing progresses smoothly, Alpenglow could potentially launch on the mainnet as early as next quarter. With the launch of the community test network, this upgrade has entered a critical validation phase, and the future performance and stability of the Solana network are now receiving significant market attention.
