I just reviewed something that really puts things into perspective. Satoshi Nakamoto, the anonymous creator of Bitcoin, is technically one of the richest people on the planet. We're talking about over $134 billion in theoretical wealth, and the craziest part is that he has never touched a single bitcoin of that.
Think about it for a second. With approximately 1.1 million bitcoins accumulated from early network mining, Satoshi would be just outside the top 10 richest people in the world. We're talking about being close to names like Warren Buffett, Steve Ballmer, and Sergey Brin from Google. It’s surreal.
What makes this even more fascinating is that this entire fortune has remained untouched since 2010. Not a single move. That has sparked all kinds of speculation for years. Is he dead? Did he disappear? Or did he simply decide never to interfere with his creation again? No one knows.
And here’s the interesting part: unlike any other billionaire, Satoshi didn’t create a traditional company, didn’t seek venture capital, didn’t list anything on the stock exchange. He just quietly launched Bitcoin in 2009 and then disappeared. Sixteen years later, that network he created is worth $2.4 trillion. The last time Satoshi wrote something publicly was in 2011.
Bitcoin has seen quite a bit of movement lately, driven by ETF inflows and institutional demand. The narrative of hedging against inflation remains strong. But here’s the point: Satoshi Nakamoto’s wealth is entirely theoretical. Those bitcoins have never been sold nor verified as accessible. It’s like the world’s biggest fortune that literally doesn’t exist in practical terms.
It gives a lot to think about regarding what Bitcoin has become since those early days when Satoshi was mining on a laptop.
