Crash! HTTP 402 has been dormant for 30 years, now activated by Coinbase and Visa. Is the next trillion-dollar track already underway? The retail investors' last chance to get on board.
Do you know about the HTTP 402 status code? It is listed alongside 200 (OK) and 404 (Not Found), intentionally left by Tim Berners-Lee back then, meaning “Payment Required.” He wanted native web payments, as fundamental as hyperlinks. But after thirty years of no progress, digital cash never materialized, and credit cards dismissed tiny transactions. The internet simply chose advertising and subscriptions, outsourcing payments to PayPal and Stripe.
Until 2025, when stablecoin circulation reached $75.3 billion, settling a transaction on Base cost only $0.0001, completely removing fee thresholds. Coinbase engineer Erik Reppel revived the 402 concept, creating the x402 protocol. Simply put: each HTTP request includes an X-PAYMENT-REQUIRED header, the server says “this resource costs this much USDC,” the agent signs a proof, the relayer verifies on-chain, all in two seconds. No registration, no API key, no subscription needed.
Guess what? In just ten months since launch, it processed 165 million transactions totaling $46.5 million. Cloudflare then established the x402 Foundation, Google integrated it into the Agent-to-Agent protocol, Stripe launched x402-based USDC payments on Base this February, and Visa incorporated interoperability into the Trusted Agent Protocol. a16z predicts that by 2030, autonomous agent transactions will reach $30 trillion. Visa’s executive said that in 2025, 95% of x402 transactions will involve meme coins—real enterprise applications are still in their infancy, but the direction is clear.
Now, is it worth investing? x402 itself has no native token; value flows to the layers built on top. The most stable are settlement chains, like Base (backed by Coinbase’s stock $COIN), earning fees per transaction. Next are agent business operating systems, like Virtuals Protocol ($VIRTUAL), which has already generated $480 million in on-chain Agentic GDP, with $1.4 million monthly protocol fees— the only project in the ecosystem with a fundamental income anchor. Then there are identity and reputation layers, like Kite AI ($KITE), built as a Layer 1 for agents, backed by PayPal Ventures and Coinbase Ventures, with a market cap of only $368 million.
If you find it expensive, check out DayDreams ($DREAMS), with a market cap of $6.3 million. Its full-stack framework has processed 11.8 million transactions, with a daily token trading volume of only $100,000–$200k. Liquidity is poor but asymmetric—if it becomes the default deployment stack, network effects could be huge. PayAI ($PAYAI), the largest x402 supporter on Solana, spans nine chains, with a fully diluted market cap of just $4.6 million.
In short: these institutions handle hundreds of trillions of dollars in transactions annually, yet the entire x402 ecosystem’s total market cap is less than $700 million—less than 0.05% of the addressable market for machine payment channels. The gap is clear, but 95% of transaction volume is still meme coins; real commercial migration takes time. For retail investors, the cleanest play is Coinbase stock, followed by monitoring Virtuals’ quarterly aGDP data. Don’t chase highs—wait for a pullback and gradually deploy.
The internet waited thirty years for native payments. Do you want to get on this wave?
