I just read something interesting about what Yat Siu from Animoca is proposing, and honestly it significantly changes how we think about the metaverse. It’s not what many envisioned a few years ago.

What he’s saying is that the metaverse shouldn’t be understood as a specific place you enter. That was the initial narrative, right? Like a centralized virtual world where we all gather. But according to him, the real future points toward something completely different: billions of AI agents interacting across multiple spaces simultaneously.

Think of it this way. Instead of viewing the metaverse as a destination, we should see it as a decentralized infrastructure where hundreds of billions of autonomous agents operate. Each fulfilling specific functions, interacting with users and with each other. It’s closer to what we imagine for Web3 than to the traditional metaverse.

This has huge implications for how we understand the future of the metaverse and the digital economy. AI agents won’t be confined to a single virtual world but distributed across open, interconnected ecosystems. It’s quite different from the corporate vision promoted by some major players.

What I find relevant is that this aligns more with the decentralized philosophy of crypto. The metaverse Siu describes doesn’t depend on a controlling company but on networks of independent agents. It’s an important conceptual shift that many in the industry still haven’t fully digested.

If this is correct, the metaverse that emerges will be much more complex, fragmented, and potentially more interesting than what was sold a few years ago. It’s worth keeping a close eye on how this evolves.
