Deep Tide TechFlow News, May 11th, according to Decrypt, the family members of the victims of the April 2025 Florida State University shooting sued OpenAI in federal court, accusing ChatGPT of providing specific guidance to the shooter Phoenix Ikner several weeks before the incident, including gun usage tips, ammunition advice, and timing choices for the crime, such as informing about lunch peak hours and “involving children which is more likely to attract national attention.” OpenAI denied the allegations, stating that ChatGPT only provided publicly available information and did not encourage illegal activities.

The Florida Attorney General has launched a criminal investigation into OpenAI and issued a subpoena. This case is seen as an important precedent in establishing legal responsibility for AI companies regarding their systems facilitating criminal behavior. Previously, the family members of victims in a Canadian shooting also filed a lawsuit against OpenAI.
