Just realized Bitcoin supply just crossed 20 million coins - we're basically at the final stretch now. Only about 980k BTC left to mine before we hit the hard cap of 21 million. Sounds like a lot, but at the current mining pace, that last million will take another 114 years to complete. Pretty wild when you think about it.
So when will all the bitcoin be mined? Based on the halving schedule and current network hashrate, we're looking at sometime in the 2140s before the final satoshi gets minted. That's over a century away. By then, mining rewards will be basically negligible anyway - the network will probably run entirely on transaction fees.
It's one of those things that really puts Bitcoin's long-term design into perspective. Most people focus on price movements, but the supply mechanics are what actually make this thing scarce. The fact that we know exactly when all the bitcoin will be mined is kind of the whole point, right?
