I'm this perpetual unlucky guy, honestly the worst part isn't the market, but accidentally sending to the wrong address with a shaky hand... Recently, I moved my coins out of the exchange and only then realized that "security" also depends on how much you have. For a few thousand dollars, a hardware wallet is enough, don't make it too complicated, complexity = easier to lose yourself. When it comes to six figures, I actually think multi-signature is more reassuring, at least it's not "one key decides life or death," but the cost is trouble, transferring funds feels like going through a process. As for social recovery, it sounds great, suitable for those with poor memory who don't want to bother, but I always imagine: what if one day the so-called "friends/platform" change faces... just like the recent social mining and fan token schemes, I don't know if attention counts as a mine, anyway I’ll keep my keys tight and not get liquidated by myself again.
