Many people say that replacing an iPhone every year is more cost-effective than replacing one every three years.

Is that really true?
Setting aside national subsidies and Hainan duty-free devices, the most cost-effective option should be the hundreds-of-millions subsidy devices on each platform, right? Each year’s new models basically participate in the hundreds-of-millions subsidy. Taking the 17PM256 as an example, the price is 8,599 yuan.
From my personal experience, the best second-hand phone buying and selling platform is PaiJiTang. The buyback price for used phones is based on the prices shown on PaiJiTang (excluding fees).
Suppose you buy 15PM/16PM/17PM in 2023/2024/2025 respectively. Your total cost is 8,599 x 3 = 25,797 yuan. Each year, once you receive the new phone, you sell the previous generation as a second-hand device; the buyback price is 6,170 x 3 = 18,510 yuan. Then the total cost of using the phones over three years is 7,287 yuan, averaging 2,429 yuan per year.
Suppose you buy a 14PM in 2023 for 8,599 yuan and keep using it until today before upgrading to the 17PM. The buyback price is 3,950 yuan. Then the total cost of using the phone over three years is 4,649 yuan, averaging 1,549 yuan per year.
