My son asked me if we are rich.

I replied: it depends on how you define rich.
He said that his friend's house is bigger.
I responded that his friend's father has a bigger mortgage.
He said that his friend's father has a cooler car.
I replied that his friend's father has a larger leasing payment.
He said that his friend's father has a boat.
I responded that his friend's father has a liability that depreciates, needs insurance, docking, fuel, and maintenance, and is only used 4 times a year.
He was thoughtful.
And then he asked me if his friend's father is poor.
I didn't answer.
He had already come to that conclusion on his own.
