Reuters, citing an insider, revealed that Alibaba (09988) is preparing to announce its artificial intelligence (AI) platform, Tongyi Qwen, along with an integration plan with the e-commerce platform Taobao. The move is intended to replace the keyword-search shopping model with conversational shopping.

This initiative will allow consumers to chat with an AI agent in the Tongyi Qwen app to browse, compare, and purchase products, without having to manually browse product listings. The Tongyi Qwen app will be able to access the complete product catalog of more than 4 billion items on Taobao and Tmall, supported by a “skill library” that can handle logistics and after-sales services. The app will also provide personalized shopping recommendations based on users’ past orders and shopping preferences.

On the Taobao platform, Alibaba will roll out a Tongyi Qwen-powered AI shopping assistant, including tools such as virtual try-on and 30-day price tracking.
