The UK governing Labour Party has recently suffered a severe setback in local elections, winning only 1,000-plus seats and losing in multiple traditional strongholds, giving up about 40 local councils’ absolute majority positions. The UK Reform Party gained more than 1,400 seats in the election and secured an absolute majority in more than 10 local councils.

Prime Minister Keir Starmer said he has no intention of resigning, reiterating that he will not “walk away,” which could plunge the country into chaos. He appointed former prime minister Gordon Brown as the Global Finance and Cooperation Envoy, attempting to consolidate his standing within the party.

The BBC reports that more than 20 MPs have publicly or privately called on Starmer to set out a resignation timetable. Labour MP Yvette Cooper said that if there are no cabinet officials on Monday or earlier to challenge Starmer’s leadership, she will launch a leadership election, forcing him to step down.
