U.S. Secretary of State Rubio and White House special envoy Witkoff (Steve Witkoff) met in Miami with Qatari Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Mohammed (Mohammed bin Abdulrahman al-Thani) to discuss U.S. support for Qatar’s defense, as well as ongoing coordination efforts to promote stability and security in the Middle East.

Rubio said on a social media platform that he met with the Qatari Prime Minister and stated, “The partnership between the two sides is crucial for deterring threats and promoting stability in the Middle East.” The State Department spokesperson, Tommy Pigott, said that Rubio expressed appreciation during the meeting for Qatar’s partnership on many issues.

In addition, citing insiders, the news website Axios reported that the U.S. and Iran are negotiating a one-page memorandum aimed at ending the fighting and establishing a detailed negotiation framework. With Qatar serving as a key mediator, the focus of the meeting was on efforts to ultimately finalize a memorandum of understanding intended to end the war. Pakistan, Egypt, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia are jointly working to help the U.S. and Iran reach an agreement. During that period, Mohammed reportedly placed a call to the Saudi foreign minister to discuss mediation efforts. The report also said that the White House believes Qatar is “particularly effective” in negotiations with Iran.
