The “refined self-interest” of former OpenAI CTO Murati: she handed over the knife herself—and was the first to sue for peace
CoinWorld News reported that former OpenAI CTO Mira Murati (now the founder of AI startup Thinking Machines Lab) revealed her full role in the November 2023 coup during the trial of Elon Musk versus Altman. Murati was accused of being the behind-the-scenes driving force pushing for Altman’s dismissal, and was the first person to sign a request demanding Altman’s return after the tide turned. Internal documents from September 2022 show that Murati had submitted a list of complaints to Altman, complaining about his shifting priorities and manufacturing panic. In 2023, Murati provided extensive evidence to co-founder Sutskever to push the board’s decision. On November 16, the board unanimously signed the documents to dismiss Altman; Murati was appointed interim CEO and took the initiative to contact Microsoft CEO Nadella. The court released 78 text messages showing that Murati moved back and forth between the board and Altman, ultimately playing an important role in the joint demand by 750 employees that the board resign.
