Slovakia plans to deploy F-16 fighters for NATO air defense missions

On May 6th local time, Slovak Defense Minister Kariniak announced that Slovakia’s F-16 fighters will participate in NATO’s “Air Policing” mission to protect the airspace of the Baltic states. The Slovak Defense Minister stated, “We are pleased to announce that we plan to participate in NATO’s ‘Air Policing’ mission in the Baltic region by the end of 2027.” The mission aims to protect the airspace of Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia—these countries are NATO members but do not have their own fighter aviation forces. Additionally, Kariniak said that starting in 2028, Slovakia also plans to participate in NATO’s rotational air defense missions and will deploy two sets of Israeli-made Barak MX air defense systems for this purpose.
