Ask AI · How does the technological breakthrough of Innovation 19 in the 19th round lead the green transformation of shipping?

On May 10, the Ningbo section of China National Radio reported: On the 9th, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology released the latest data on China’s shipbuilding industry for the first quarter of 2026. The three key indicators continued to lead the world with an overwhelming advantage, delivering a “great start.”

What stands out in this substantial performance report is that a vessel from Ningbo, Zhejiang, was specifically mentioned—the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology, when releasing the data and elaborating on China’s shipbuilding industry’s achievements in green transformation, deliberately highlighted Ningbo shipping enterprises, including “Innovation 19” built by Zhejiang Chuangxin Shipping Co., Ltd.

From the macro boom in the industry to the micro delivery of vessels, behind this is China’s shipbuilding industry accurately positioning itself along the track of “simultaneous growth in quantity and quality.” “Innovation 19” has become a flagship work for China’s low-carbon transition in shipbuilding, showcasing Ningbo’s hard-core strength on the green track.

Macro domination: New orders surge by 195%, China’s shipbuilding industry continues to lead in a crushing fashion

First, look at the big picture. From January to March 2026, China’s shipbuilding industry delivered a truly “phenomenal” set of results: new orders reached 59.53 million deadweight tons, up 195.2% year on year; completed shipbuilding volume reached 15.68 million deadweight tons, up 46.0%; and the order backlog totaled 322.3 million deadweight tons, up 43.6%.

In terms of global share, China accounted for 57.3% of the world’s completed shipbuilding volume, 84.9% of new orders, and 69.8% of the backlog. Among 18 major ship types worldwide, China ranked first globally in new order volume for 15 ship types. In the field of large vessels, China’s order market shares for ultra-large crude carriers, large car carriers, bulk carriers, and container ships of 10,000 TEU and above all exceed 90% in the international market.

This means that for every 10 new ship orders that emerge globally, nearly 8.5 go to Chinese shipyards. But compared with the absolute advantage in “quantity,” what is even more worth attention is the profound shift in “quality.”

Green turning point: 80% green orders, low-carbon ship types cluster and surge

Even more impressive are the results of the green transformation. In the first quarter, China’s international share of new green ship orders reached 80.2%. Mass deliveries of new-energy vessels such as methanol, LNG, and pure electric ships formed a pattern of “full coverage, technology-leading, and mass delivery.” From “Kun” series methanol container ships to the “Tianshan” LNG vessel, and to the “Innovation 19” built by Ningbo-based enterprises, China’s green shipbuilding is achieving a leap from technological breakthroughs to commercial implementation.

So where exactly is “Innovation 19” special?

Among many delivered green ships, “Innovation 19” carries an unmistakably hardcore label: China’s first domestically made river-sea direct bulk carrier using a single methanol fuel.

Invested and built by Zhejiang Chuangxin Shipping Co., Ltd., the vessel officially set sail on February 14 this year, marking a key step forward in the commercial application of methanol fuel in China’s shipping industry. Its breakthrough is mainly reflected in three aspects:

It achieves a complete shift in energy pathways. Unlike the single-methanol/fuel oil dual-fuel transition solutions commonly seen in the market today, “Innovation 19” adopts single methanol-fuel technology. This means it completely abandons reliance on traditional fuel oil, representing a truly pure green power source.

The emission-reduction effect is immediate and striking. Based on measured data, the vessel’s carbon dioxide emissions drop sharply by 90%, and sulfur oxides are nearly zero emissions. With the global shipping industry facing increasingly stringent carbon-reduction pressure, such indicators have already reached the future environmental red line ahead of schedule.

It solves the green transformation challenge of the special “river-sea direct” scenario. As a “river-sea direct” vessel, it breaks the previous limitations that sea-going ships cannot enter rivers and river ships cannot go to sea, enabling one-stop direct travel between Ningbo Zhoushan Port and ports along the Yangtze River. Its shallow draft, high energy efficiency, and green design precisely match the green logistics needs under the Yangtze River Delta integration.

Ningbo strength: Green shipping empowers the port economy and supports the “dual carbon” goals

“Innovation 19” is invested and built by Wuhan Chuangxin River-Sea Transport Co., Ltd., and is operated and managed by its wholly owned subsidiary Zhejiang Chuangxin Shipping Co., Ltd. The birth of “Innovation 19” also reflects the pioneering and innovative characteristics of Ningbo shipping enterprises.

As a private enterprise, Zhejiang Chuangxin Shipping did not choose simple capacity expansion on traditional routes. Instead, it directly entered the “deep water” of shipping decarbonization. While many companies in the industry were still evaluating and observing which alternative fuel would be more suitable as a transition solution, they directly bet on the single methanol route, breaking the market’s hesitation with actual orders. The subsequent 4 sister ships are expected to be put into operation one after another this year, forming China’s first methanol-powered river-sea direct fleet.

This enterprise-led green trial not only provides a zero-carbon example for domestic trade shipping, but also demonstrates the strong flexibility of China’s shipbuilding industrial chain in supporting shipowners with customized, forward-looking R&D.

As the world’s number one port, Ningbo Zhoushan Port is a core hub for China’s green transformation in shipping, and local enterprises like Zhejiang Chuangxin Shipping are an important driving force for the transition. The commissioning of “Innovation 19” is both a snapshot of technological innovation and green transformation by Ningbo shipping enterprises, and it aligns with the development direction of China’s shipbuilding industry toward high-end and low-carbon. In the future, as more new-energy vessels such as methanol and LNG are commissioned, Ningbo shipping will continue to inject momentum into China’s global leadership in shipbuilding and the realization of the “dual carbon” goals, making green the most distinctive underlying color of Ningbo’s port economy.
