Just realized a lot of people don't know how to properly update their SASSA details, especially with those December payment dates coming up. Learned this the hard way tbh.

So if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support etc), you literally can't do banking details changes online - gotta go to your nearest SASSA office in person. They'll give you the "Payment Method Change Form" and you need to bring your original ID, a copy, and proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than 3 months or a letter from the bank). Important thing: the account must be ONLY in your name, no joint accounts. Processing takes up to 21 working days and if you submit after the 15th of the month, it won't kick in until next cycle.

For cellphone number updates on permanent grants, you can try calling the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 but honestly they might still ask you to visit an office to verify everything properly.

Now if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's way easier - the whole SRD banking details update process is online through their portal. You enter your ID number, they send you an SMS link, you click it and update your bank info there. Takes a few days to weeks for the bank to verify. For your phone number, same thing - use their contact portal, enter your ID and Application ID, add the new number, they send an OTP to confirm.

One heads up though: there's sketchy fake websites out there pretending to be SASSA, so always make sure you're on the official portal when updating anything. If the online thing isn't working, just call them or visit an office. Better safe than sorry with your grant money.
