Many people do not know that there is a labor right that companies frequently ignore. We’re talking about the Sunday premium in Mexico, a benefit that has been in the law for more than 90 years but is still unknown to many workers.

Since 1931, it has been contemplated in the Federal Labor Law, so it is completely legitimate. If you work on Sunday and your day off is another day of the week, your employer is required to pay you extra compensation. It’s not a favor—it’s your right.

How exactly does it work? Basically, when you work on Sunday, you are entitled to receive an additional 25% on top of your daily salary. It sounds simple, but many employers overlook it. The Federal Attorney’s Office for the Defense of Workers is clear on this: it applies to everyone who works on Sunday, regardless of whether it is permanent or occasional.

To better understand with current numbers: the minimum wage in 2026 is 315.04 pesos per day. 25% of that is 78.76 pesos extra. So instead of earning 315.04 pesos that day, you should receive 394.8 pesos. If you earn more, the calculation is just as straightforward.

If you want to calculate your Sunday premium, it’s very easy. Divide your monthly salary by 30 to get your daily salary, then multiply that result by 0.25. That number is exactly what you are owed for working on Sunday.

It’s important to know this because many companies simply do not apply it. The Sunday premium in Mexico is a right established by law, so if you work on Sundays, make sure they pay it to you.
