I just checked how much they are charging for using a cell phone while driving in Mexico City, and honestly, it's much more expensive than in other states. In the capital, you can be fined up to 4,105 pesos if you're caught with the phone in your hand, while in Jalisco, the maximum is 2,932 pesos. The difference is because the capital assigns more UMAs for the same infraction.
What's interesting is that if you pay quickly in Mexico City, you get a 50% discount if you settle within the first 10 business days. So a fine for using a cell phone in CDMX of 4,105 pesos could be significantly reduced if you don't wait. In Jalisco, it depends more on the officer's discretion.
And watch out, the prohibition is total: it doesn't matter if you're at a traffic light, in traffic, or the car is stopped, you can't manipulate the phone. Hands-free only. Since February, the costs have increased by 3.69%, so these numbers are now in effect. Honestly, the fine for using a cell phone in CDMX has become hefty this year.
