LayerZero admits fault! Acknowledges mistake in $292 million attack

LayerZero stated on Friday U.S. time that it "made a mistake" by protecting high-value crypto assets with its verification infrastructure under vulnerable configurations, marking a significant shift in tone after a responsibility dispute with Kelp DAO. LayerZero initially blamed the $292 million hack on Kelp, claiming it chose a high-risk "1/1" configuration, which required only one decentralized verification network (DVN) to approve cross-chain transfers, creating a single point of failure. LayerZero said it will no longer support the 1/1 DVN configuration and will migrate all paths to a default of 5/5, or 3/3 on chains with only three DVNs. The company reiterated that its core protocol was unaffected and pointed out that developers are ultimately responsible for configuring their security assumptions.
