So if you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you basically can't do anything online—you have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office. Yeah, I know it's annoying. You'll need to fill out the Payment Method Change Form, bring your original SA ID, and get proof of your new bank account (a bank statement not older than 3 months works). They'll send it to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to take effect next month, otherwise you're waiting another cycle.
For the SRD grant though? That's where things are actually easier. You can update banking details and your phone number online through the official SASSA SRD portal. You'll need your SA ID number and they'll send you a secure SMS link. Just follow the prompts, enter your new bank details, and boom—it gets verified in a few days to weeks. The one thing to remember: the account HAS to be in your name, no joint accounts or third-party nonsense.
If you're changing your cellphone number, especially for SRD, it's pretty straightforward on the portal. You enter your ID, new number, reason for change, and they send an OTP to verify. But honestly, if the online thing isn't working (which happens sometimes), just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit an office in person. Way less stressful than dealing with a broken portal.
One last thing—be careful with fake websites claiming to help you update details. Stick to the official SASSA channels only. Your grant money is too important to mess around with sketchy links.
