Just got back from Mauritius and wow, the taxi situation there is wild. If you're planning a trip, seriously do your homework on mauritius taxi prices before you land. I got quoted 4000 MUR for an airport transfer that should've been maybe 1500. Absolute robbery.
The thing is, there's no standard meter system, so drivers just throw out random numbers based on how you look or where you're staying. I watched a local get in the same taxi and negotiate down to half what they asked me. Super frustrating.
Here's what actually worked: I downloaded Yugo and DodoTaxi beforehand and used those to figure out what fair rates should be. Got me way better leverage when haggling. Also, the second time around, I just pre-booked everything online. Fixed price, no surprises, and the driver showed up on time.
Avoid the unlicensed taxis hanging around the airport—they're aggressive and will absolutely try to squeeze you. Stick with licensed services or apps. And if you're staying at one of the fancy hotels in Balaclava or Le Morne, don't use their transport desk. They add crazy resort commissions. Better off booking independently.
The luxury hotel taxis are honestly the worst value. You're paying premium rates for the same ride you could get cheaper elsewhere. Car rental sounds good in theory, but navigating local traffic is stressful if you're not used to it.
Bottom line: research mauritius taxi prices online before you go, use apps to benchmark, and pre-book when you can. Saves money, saves stress, and you actually know what you're paying upfront instead of getting into awkward negotiations with drivers.
