Just had to sort out my SASSA details and realized the process is actually different depending on which grant you're getting. Thought I'd share what I learned since it's not super straightforward.

So if you're on one of the regular permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you basically can't do anything online—you have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office. They'll give you a form to fill out if you want to change your bank account or switch to cash send. You need to bring your ID (original and copy) plus proof of your new bank account—either a bank statement from the last three months or a letter from the bank. One thing they're strict about: the account has to be 100% in your name, no joint accounts or anything. After you submit, it takes up to 21 working days for the bank to verify everything, and if you submit after the 15th of the month, it won't kick in until the next cycle.

But here's where it gets easier—if you're on the SRD R370 grant, the whole thing is online. You go to the SASSA SRD portal, put in your ID number, they send you a link via SMS, and you can update your banking details or switch to cash send right there. Way faster than the permanent grants. The verification still takes a few days to a week or two, but at least you're not queuing at an office.

For updating your phone number on SRD, same deal—it's all online through their contact details page. You enter your ID and application number, put in your new number, they send you an OTP to confirm, and you're done. Just make sure if you're going the cash send route that your phone number is properly registered (RICA-compliant).

One warning though: there are dodgy websites out there pretending to be SASSA, especially for changing SRD details. Always use the official portal or call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 if you're not sure. Honestly, for anything complicated, just calling them or visiting in person is probably safer anyway, even if it takes longer.
