Just realized I need to update my SASSA details and honestly the whole process is a bit confusing. Been trying to figure out if I can do it online or if I actually have to go to an office. Apparently it depends on which grant you're getting.

So if you're on one of the permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you pretty much have to go in person to the SASSA office. They want you to fill out forms, bring your ID, proof of your new bank account - like a recent bank statement - and they'll verify everything. Takes about 21 working days for the bank to process it. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to work for next month's payment, otherwise you'll wait another cycle.

But if you're on the SRD R370 grant, that's different. You can change your banking details online through their portal, which is actually way easier. Same thing though - account has to be in your name only, no shared accounts. And if you need to change your number for any reason (lost your phone, switched providers, whatever), you can do that online too. They send you an OTP to verify it's actually you.

The phone number update is important because that's how they send you the verification links and payment notifications. Honestly just go straight to the official SASSA portal if you're on SRD - don't trust random websites claiming to help you change details. And if the online thing isn't working, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11. Apparently that's usually the safest way anyway if you're dealing with anything complicated.
