Just realized a lot of people are confused about how to update my SASSA details, especially when the payment dates are coming up. Let me break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're on.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you basically can't do this online. I know, it's annoying. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and a recent bank statement (stamped, not older than 3 months). Fill out the Payment Method Change Form there, and they'll send it to your bank for verification. This takes like 21 working days, so if you want the change to show up next month, submit before the 15th. After that, you're stuck with the old payment method for another cycle.

For cellphone number updates on permanent grants, same deal—call 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. They can sometimes help over the phone but might still need you to come in.

Now, if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 one), this is way easier because it's all online. You go to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your 13-digit ID number, they text you a link, you click it and update your banking details right there. Takes a few days to weeks for verification. To update your phone number for SRD, same portal—you'll get an OTP sent to confirm the change.

Real talk: make sure the bank account is 100% in your name. SASSA won't pay into joint or third-party accounts. And watch out for fake websites pretending to update your grants. Always use the official SASSA link. If the online portal gives you grief, just call or visit the office directly—it's slower but actually reliable.
