Just went through the whole SASSA banking details update process and honestly, it's not as complicated as people make it sound. Here's what actually worked for me.

If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), forget about doing it online—you have to go to your nearest SASSA office in person. They'll give you the Payment Method Change Form, and you need to bring your original SA ID plus a recent bank statement (less than 3 months old) or a letter from your bank confirming the account is active and in your name. Important thing: the account has to be solely in your name, no joint accounts or anything like that.

Once you submit it, they send everything to the bank for verification, which takes up to 21 working days. The key timing thing is submitting before the 15th of the month if you want the new details to take effect for next month's payment. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another cycle.

For the SRD R350 grant, it's way different—everything's online through the official SASSA portal. You enter your ID number, they text you a secure link, you click it and update your banking details. Takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification, but at least you don't have to leave your house.

Changing your cellphone number depends on which grant you're on. For permanent grants, best to just call 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. For SRD, use their contact details portal—you'll need your ID and Application ID, then they send an OTP to verify. One heads up: there are fake websites out there trying to scam people, so always use the official SASSA links.

The whole updating banking details for SASSA process takes patience, but it's straightforward once you know what documents you need. Just make sure everything matches your ID exactly.
