Just rewatched The Wolf of Wall Street and got thinking about something most people don't realize: the guy at the center of it all is actually still making serious money, despite everything that went down.
So Jordan Belfort's story is wild. In the 1990s, he ran Stratton Oakmont, a brokerage firm that became legendary for all the wrong reasons. The pump-and-dump schemes targeting penny stocks? He defrauded over 1,500 investors out of $200+ million. At his peak in the late 90s, his net worth hit around $400 million. But then it all collapsed.
Convicted in 1999 for securities fraud and money laundering, Belfort served 22 months in prison and was ordered to repay victims. Here's where it gets interesting though - he's only paid back about $13-14 million of the $110 million owed. The restitution obligations are still hanging over him, which is why estimates of his current net worth are all over the place. Some say he's worth $100-134 million, others argue he's technically negative when you factor in what he still owes.
But the man figured out how to rebuild. After getting out, he pivoted hard. Started writing books - The Wolf of Wall Street memoir got turned into that Scorsese film, which honestly kind of made him famous in a weird way. Then came the speaking circuit. Belfort now charges anywhere from $30,000 to $200,000 per event, pulling in roughly $9 million annually just from that. His books generate another estimated $18 million a year.
Here's the part that gets people: he initially promised to direct all proceeds to victims. Ended up paying $21,000 out of $1.2 million from the film deal instead. In 2018, courts went after him for not paying restitution from his speaking fees and seized his stake in a wellness company.
The crypto chapter is pretty funny too. Back in 2018, Belfort was calling Bitcoin a fraud, saying it was exactly like his old scams. Then 2021 happened, prices exploded, and suddenly he's investing in crypto startups like Squirrel Technologies and Pawtocol. Both are essentially dead now. His wallet got hacked for $300k in fall 2021, and he's been charging crypto entrepreneurs big money for advice on navigating the space.
So what's his actual net worth in 2026? Honestly, it depends who you ask and how you calculate outstanding restitution. But the guy went from prison to rebuilding a substantial income through speaking, books, and consulting. Whether that makes him worth $100+ million or technically negative is the real debate. What's clear is that notoriety from that film gave him a second act most people don't get after conviction.
