Just realized a lot of people are struggling with updating their SASSA grant details, especially when it comes to changing bank account info. So I thought I'd break down what actually works because the process is different depending on which grant you're getting.

If you're on permanent grants like old age or disability, you can't do this online unfortunately. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and proof of your new bank account - they want a bank statement not older than three months or an official letter from your bank. Fill out the Payment Method Change Form there, and they'll send it for verification. Takes up to 21 working days usually, so if you need it sorted for next month's payment, submit before the 15th. Miss that deadline and you're waiting another month.

But if you're on the SRD grant (the R370 relief one), that's actually way simpler because it's all online now. Just go to the SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, they'll send you a link via SMS, and you update your banking details right there. They verify it takes a few days to a couple weeks. The catch is the account has to be in your name - they won't pay into joint or third-party accounts, so don't bother trying that.

Changing your phone number is just as important honestly. For SRD you can use their contact details portal - enter your ID and application ID, put in your new number, they send you an OTP to confirm. For permanent grants, just call the helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office. There's a lot of fake websites out there claiming they can change this stuff, so stick to the official SASSA channels or you'll lose access to your notifications and verification links.

Anyone else had issues with this process? The waiting times are rough but at least you know what to expect now.
