Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA payment info and honestly it's not as straightforward as you'd think. Been helping my mom figure this out and here's what I learned.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child support), you literally can't do it online. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID, a recent bank statement (less than 3 months old), and fill out their Payment Method Change Form. They'll verify everything and send it to your bank, which takes up to 3 weeks. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month or you'll miss that month's payment.
Now if you're on the SRD grant, it's actually easier - you can update banking details for R350 online through their portal using just your ID number. They send you a secure SMS link, you click it, enter your new account details. Takes a few days to verify with the bank.
One thing that caught me off guard - they won't pay into joint accounts or anyone else's account. Has to be solely in your name. And if you're changing your phone number, especially for SRD, make sure you do it through their official portal, not some random site. There's a lot of scam websites out there pretending to be SASSA.
Honestly the hardest part is the in-person requirement for permanent grants. SASSA offices get crazy busy. But if you can't get it done online, just bite the bullet and go early in the morning. Better than missing payments.
